  • Fauré: Requiem

Our 2025-26 season concludes with a performance of the 1883 version of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, with orchestra and soloists. Fauré’s Requiem differs significantly from others composed during the nineteenth century in that he omitted the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum movements, which for most composers were the dramatic center of the work, and added the Pie Jesu and In Paradisum movements. Consequently the prevailing mood is one of peacefulness, serenity, and hope. Other composers create stronger, arguably more dramatic movements; Fauré’s art is on a far more ethereal plane. Its unearthly beauty and tenderness have made it one of the most enduring works of our present time. The concert will also include a cappella works by David, Golovanov, Rheinberger, Schütz, and Taverner.

Founder and Artistic Director, Bruce Tammen, is retiring at the end of this season, after leading Chicago Chorale for 24 years. A reception to celebrate and thank Bruce will be held at Ida Noyes Hall, on the University Chicago campus, following the concert. The reception is free to attend, but tickets are required.
