  • Rachmaninoff: All-Night Vigil

Chorale opens its 2025-26 season with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil.  Completed in 1915 and immediately hailed as a masterpiece, the All-Night Vigil was the last piece of sacred choral music that Rachmaninoff wrote, as the Russian Revolution two years later culminated in a ban on religious music and necessitated his flight to Europe and then the United States.  The work was not heard again in Russia until the 1960s.  Publication in the United States brought it to the attention of American conductors, and its stature has steadily grown with choirs and audiences throughout the world.  The richness and beauty of the music, as well as the themes explored through its liturgical framework, appeals to listeners from all religious traditions.  Its ravishing harmonies and constantly varying textures are ideally suited to Chicago Chorale's lush a cappella sound.
